New robot factory in Europe - Groundbreaking for Yaskawa production in Kočevje, Slovenia
Yaskawa – one of the major world players in the area of industrial robots, with more than 380,000 installed units, and also a leading global provider of drive and automation technology – is pursuing an ambitious strategy of expansion in Europe. Here, the goal is to also be counted among the leading manufacturers of industrial robots in Europe in the medium-term.
Starting in 2018, the first Motoman robots from Yaskawa will be manufactured through purely European production. As part of this, a new robot production facility as well as a new European robotics development centre are being built in Slovenia. The plant is to cover approximately 80 percent of European robot demand. The investment volume is around 25 million euro. Beyond this, roughly two hundred jobs are also to be created for this at Yaskawa – as well as further positions with European suppliers.
The Robotics Division currently employs some 960 workers across Europe – with nearly a third of this in Germany. In total, Yaskawa employs around 350 development and application engineers in Europe.
On the occasion of the opening, Bruno Schnekenburger, President of the Robotics Division at YASKAWA Europe GmbH stated: “The new production and development capacities allow us to offer our customers in Europe the shortest delivery times possible as well as to expand our options to offer customer-specific robotic solutions. Through this, we want to continue to deepen our cooperation with them and to further expand market shares jointly with our mechanical engineering customers and our system integrators. Thanks to the expanded regional development capacities, we are getting even closer to the European market and technology trends.”
“Europe is the leader in many technologies, and we want to consistently demonstrate to our customers how excited we are to be here to develop even more efficient solutions with them,” adds Manfred Stern, President and CEO of Yaskawa Europe GmbH.
Three further large projects
In addition to the new robot plant, Yaskawa is currently building in three further large projects: More than 10,000 m2 of production and office space are being constructed in Nantes, France. In Torsås, Sweden, a new factory is being created along with new office workstations. The completion of these new buildings is scheduled for the end of 2018. By contrast, the building extension with 4000 m2 of production and warehouse space and 1200 m2 of office space is already well advanced at the European headquarters for robotics in Allershausen, Germany, and will be opened in January 2018.
These investments are part of the company’s European initiative as presented at the end of last year by Hiroshi Ogasawara, President and CEO of Yaskawa Electric, as well as by Manfred Stern, Corporate Vice President of Yaskawa Electric and CEO of Yaskawa Europe, during a press conference in Frankfurt, Germany. Besides the expansion of infrastructure, the strategy also includes the strengthening of development and application engineering as well as acquisitions related to the ‘Energy’ and ‘Marine’ areas.
