Functional Safety for Sigma-V Servo Drive

Movements of machinery present risks for operating and maintenance personnel. Typical situations which impose safe machine conditions are commissioning, setup, troubleshooting and people next to the production process. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to protect people against machine-related hazards. The integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) function as well as the Advanced Safety Option for the servo drive of the Sigma-5 series help you implement a safe and cost-effective motion automation.

There are numerous legally binding directives and standards in Europe for the construction of safe machines. The most important ones are stated below:

2006/42/EC

European machinery directive

EN ISO 12100-1/2

Safety of machinery

EN ISO 14121

Safety of machinery – Risk assessment

EN ISO 13849‑1: 2008

Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems

IEC 61508

Functional safety pf electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems

EN 60204-1

Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment of machines

IEC 61800‑5‑2

Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems

Part 5-2: Safety requirements – Functional

The standard EN ISO 13849-1:2008 “Safety of Machinery” replaces the well-known EN 954-1 (transition-time extended to 31.12.2011). The safety of a machine is now assessed either according to the Performance Level (PL a-e) in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1:2008 or according to the Safety Integrity Level (SIL 1-4) in accordance with IEC 62061. The safety-related functions for speed adjustable drives are defined in IEC 61800-5-2.

Sigma-5 servo amplifiers are certified by TÜV Süd (German Technical Control Board) and fulfill the following safety standards:
